So, You Want to Write a Novel?
According to statistics, roughly 82% of Americans say they want to write a book “someday.” I am here to be your “someday” facilitator.
So, You Want to Write a Novel? is an eight-week online course designed to help you develop your ideas, strengthen, make meaningful plan and write your first few chapters.
Class begins September 17 and meets 7:00–9:00 p.m. via Zoom for eight weeks.
So, You Want to Write a Novel? is designed to take you from an idea to a workable plan and your first few chapters. Over eight weeks, you will develop a compelling protagonist, shape the central conflict of your story, and create a workable plan for your novel. Then, you’ll move from planning to writing, with the goal of completing up to the first three chapters of your novel.
Students will also have access to a Google Classroom with assignments, learning resources, and opportunities for discussion between our weekly meetings. I’ll be available by email and one-on-one sessions when you are feeling stuck or frustrated. You’ll never be on your own.
Every other class will be run workshop-style, giving you the opportunity to share your writing and receive constructive feedback in a supportive, small-group environment.
No previous fiction-writing experience is necessary. You just need an idea, (and even that we can work on) an interest in writing, and a willingness to put words on the page.

About Your Instructor
I hold both an MFA and a PhD in Creative Writing and have more than 30 years of experience as an educator. I am currently teaching in an MFA program. As a working writer, I understand both the excitement of beginning a novel and the challenges of getting it from that first idea to a completed manuscript.
I am the author of two nonfiction books, two novels, and a poetry collection, and my short stories and poetry have appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies. My teaching combines my experience as both an educator and a published writer, with an emphasis on developing craft, building a sustainable writing practice, and creating a supportive workshop community where writers can take risks and grow.
Most importantly, I believe you don’t have to already think of yourself as a “real writer” to start writing a novel. You become a writer by writing—and this class is a place to begin.
